Hypertension is the Main Cause of Heart Disease, Kidney Failure, and Stroke

Hypertension or high blood pressure, is often referred to as "the silent killer because it is often without complaints. Hypertension is the main single contributor to heart disease, kidney failure, and stroke in Indonesia.

A person is diagnosed with hypertension if the blood pressure measurement results show a systolic pressure (first number) 140 mmHg and/or diastolic pressure (second number) 90 mmHg in more than 1 (one) visit.

Based on the Basic Health Research (Riskesdas 2018) the prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia is 34.1%. This has increased compared to the prevalence of hypertension in Riskesdas 2013 which was 25.8%. It is estimated that only 1/3 of cases of hypertension in Indonesia are diagnosed, the rest are undiagnosed.

Chairman of the Indonesian Hypertension Doctors Association, dr. Erwinanto, Sp. JP(K), FIHA said that if someone suffers from hypertension and it is not controlled, it will be the main single contributor to heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.

"Every 20/10 mm Hg increase in blood will increase the risk of coronary heart disease 2 times higher," he said at a virtual World Hypertension Day press conference, Thursday (6/5).

Hypertension can be prevented by controlling risky behaviors such as smoking, unhealthy diet (less consumption of vegetables and fruit, excessive salt consumption), obesity, lack of physical activity, alcohol consumption, and stress. The success of controlling blood pressure to reach the target has been shown to reduce the incidence of stroke by 30-40% and the incidence of coronary heart disease by 20%.

Consumption of salt must be considered, it is recommended 5 to 6 grams per day. Unfortunately in daily practice one never calculates how much salt consumption.

In addition to consuming salt, healthy tips to reduce hypertension must be done. Erwinanto suggested to eat more vegetables, fruit, a little saturated fat, fish, and a little sugar. This must be accompanied by regular exercise 30 minutes per day.

Need to Control

If someone has hypertension, then the effort that must be done is to control blood pressure. The public is advised to check their blood pressure at the nearest health facility.

Patients with hypertension are expected to immediately visit a doctor to get treatment and the efforts that must be made to control hypertension.

“If the individual has received medication and already knows how much blood pressure should be lowered, then continue taking medication even though his blood pressure has reached the target.

Hypertension is a chronic disease that cannot be cured. So if someone's blood pressure has reached the target, it doesn't mean he's cured, but it's under control. If it is controlled, it is hoped that heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure will reduce the risk.

"The important thing is that if we can control blood pressure, the risk for stroke and death from stroke will decrease by 30 to 40%," said Erwinanto.

The government's efforts to manage hypertension in the community are through health promotion, early detection, and case management. Director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases dr. Cut Putri Arainie said the most important thing was to prevent risk factors.

"Once there is a risk factor, immediately change behavior, because if there are non-communicable diseases including hypertension, it can only be controlled throughout the ages, during that time he must obey the doctor's advice," said dr. Cut.

World Hypertension Day

World Hypertension Day is observed every 17 May. The Global Theme for World Hypertension Day 2021 is “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer”. Indonesia adopted the theme: "Prevent and Control Hypertension Properly for a Longer Healthy Life".

This theme aims to increase public awareness to prevent and control hypertension starting from oneself and one's family. The public is advised to take blood pressure measurements independently or at health care facilities at least once a month.

The Ministry of Health through the Directorate of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases held an “Independent Blood Pressure Measurement Movement” during the month of May 2021 through the website https://preventionhypertension.top

Through the website, one can find out the category of blood pressure by inputting previous blood pressure data. Not only that, it also contains information and education related to the prevention and control of hypertension.
